Mary Jane Hoenig

Mary Jane Hoenig, nee Prosser, 85, of Belleville, IL, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2017, at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, IL.

The Prosser family, relatives, friends, and neighbors have been blessed with experiencing the past 80 plus years knowing Mary Jane as their daughter, sister, wife, mentor, confidant, and dedicated all-around caring friend.  She was extremely caring to her parents and brothers, with an untiring devotion and concern for their welfare.  Anyone who knew Mary Jane can attest to that.

Born in East St. Louis on May 15, 1931, Mary Jane attended Holy Angels Catholic Grade School and Notre Dame Academy in Belleville, IL.  In 1952, Mary Jane graduated from St. John’s School of Nursing in St. Louis, MO, as a Registered Nurse, an accomplishment that she was very proud of because she maintained her R.N. licensure throughout her life.  Mary Jane was highly suited to the tender loving care associated with the nursing profession and she relished it.

After graduating from St. John’s, Mary Jane practiced at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital for about 25 years.  Her responsibility was serving as an operating room nursing supervisor, allowing close contact with children whom she loved.  In her private life, Mary Jane remained active as a traveling R.N. professional, continuing TLC for her family, relatives and friends, or anyone who needed a hand; truly, TLC in action.

Mary Jane was a member of the Belleville Diocese Ministry to the Sick and Aged for almost 30 years.  This allowed her to perform thousands of Eucharistic visits to patients, mostly at Memorial Hospital.  Mary Jane was also a Eucharistic Minister at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.  She was also very proud of her role as a Eucharistic Minister at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows for quite some time.

Mary Jane was a member of the Alumnae Association of St. John’s Hospital in St. Louis.  She enjoyed very much driving with her family and husband. She particularly loved trips to Florida.

Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents, William J. Sr. and Ruth Mary, nee Sheridan, Prosser.

She will be greatly missed by her husband of 38 years, Howard E. Hoenig, whom she married on February 10, 1979;
a brother, William Prosser;
a brother-in-law, Daniel (Margaret) Hoenig of Fort Worth, TX;
the Ysursa family;
close friends of long-standing, Ministry to the Sick and Aged and Our Lady of the Snows personnel;
31 nieces and nephews;
and anyone who crossed paths, either professionally or personally.

Memorials may be made to the Ministry to the Sick and Aged, or to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows.  Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.

Visitation: Friends may visit with the family from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, January 30, 2017, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Belleville, IL.

Funeral: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, January 30, 2017, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Belleville, IL, with Rev. Allen Maes, O.M.I. officiating.

    Dear Dr. Hoeing,
    We are so sorry to hear about Mary Jane. We are in Michigan helping our son and daughter-in-law with a new baby. Sadly, we will miss the wake and funeral. Please know that we would attend if we were in town. You and your family will be in our special thoughts and prayers tomorrow. Sincerely, Terry and Marylou

    Dear Hoenig Family:
    I wish to extend my condolences and prayer to you as you grieve the death of Mary Jane. I'm sorry I'm not able to be with you during this time and for the Mass of Christian Burial. Mary Jane was a dedicated Minister of the Eucharist with us in the Catholic Ministry to Sick & Aged - for nearly 30 years. She surely was a blessing to us and the those she ministered to as a representative of Christ. May God now give her eternal joy and peace, and may He continue to watch over you.

    Was so sorry to hear of Mary Jane's passing. I fondly remember times I spent with her when she let me observe surgeries at Cardinal Glennon Hospital. We'd follow that up with dinner and lots of good talks.
    She was a special person and will be missed.

    I am so sorry to hear about Mary Jane. I was just thinking the other day that I haven't seen Howard and Mary Jane for a while. Had I known I would have certainly paid my respects. I am happy to have met such a sweet woman.
