Cecil L. Garland, 70, of Belleville, IL, born June 7, 1946, in Plant City, FL, died Saturday, March 4, 2017, at Barnes Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, MO.
Mr. Garland served as a course superintendent at Clinton Hill Golf Course for 25 years and previously worked as a welder for Peabody Coal Company at the River King Tipple, Freeburg, IL. Cecil was a member of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) Local 1148.
He was a graduate of Freeburg Community High School (FCHS), Class of 1965. Cecil excelled in his athleticism, serving as co-captain of the Freeburg Varsity Basketball Team and lettering in basketball, baseball, and track and field. As an adult, Cecil enjoyed all sports and was an avid and at times “scratch” golfer.
After high school, Cecil proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1965 through 1969. He was a graduate of the U.S. Army Transportation School, primarily serving his tour of duty at the U.S. Army Transportation Center in Fort Eustis, VA.
During the 1970's and 1980's, Cecil also served many of Freeburg’s youth, coaching both boys’ and girls’ baseball and boys’ soccer teams.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nancy, nee Allsup, Garland, who died on November 2, 2012; beloved dog Angel; his parents, Cecil E. and Emma, nee Barber, Garland; siblings, L. Edward Garland, Eva Persch, and Joseph M. Garland; and a son-in-law, Tim Huffman,
Surviving are his beloved children, a daughter, Tina Huffman;
and sons, Matthew Garland, and Sean Garland;
four grandchildren, Jacob Huffman,
Rhiannon Huffman (Brice Otte),
Gabby Garland, and Emma Garland;
a great-granddaughter, Hadley Otte;
three sisters and four brothers, Dorothy Clement,
Mary Arndt, Allen Garland, Bruce Garland,
Larry Garland, G. Terry Garland, and Cheryl Gordon;
first wife, Charlene (David) Helfrich;
many nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Funeral: A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 9, 2017, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Freeburg, IL.
Burial will be at Green Mount Protestant Cemetery, Belleville, IL.
