Joseph Otto Schneider, 87, of Belleville, IL, born January 13, 1927, in Mascoutah, IL, died Thursday, January 1, 2015, at Rosewood Care Center, Swansea, IL.

Mr. Schneider was the former owner and operator of Geissler Roofing Company in Belleville, IL, a past president of the Southern Illinois Builders Association, and a member of the Associated General Contractors.  He was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church, Belleville, IL, the Holy Name Society at the church, and the Belleville Optimist Club.

Joe played piano and harmonica and was a great dancer in his day.  He loved geography, history and travel, and was legendary for his prowess at ping-pong, Scrabble and crossword puzzles, and for his “groaner” puns.  He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and will be sadly missed by family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Marshall and Mary, nee Berkel, Schneider; a sister, Aurelia Stookey; and a brother, Arthur Schneider.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Beatrice L., nee Mayer, Schneider, whom he married on November 23, 1949;
three daughters and two sons, Elaine Ramsay of Collinsville, IL,
Alan (Peg) Schneider of St. Louis, MO,
Eric Schneider of St. Louis, MO,
Valerie Phillips of Overland Park, KS,
and Laurie (Rob) Hart of Overland Park, KS;
and ten grandchildren, Blake and Kyle Edwards,
Tara, Kasey, and Julie Schneider,
Matthew Phillips, Gabriel Schneider,
Kayley McBride, and Lauren and Ashley Hart.

Memorials may be made to St. Teresa Catholic Church, to St. Teresa Catholic Grade School or to the Community Interfaith Food Pantry.  Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.

Visitation:  Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 12:00 Noon Saturday, January 17, 2015, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, Belleville, IL.

Funeral:  A Memorial Mass will be held at 12 Noon Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, Belleville, IL, with Msgr. David Darin officiating.

Interment will be at Green Mount Catholic Cemetery at a later date.
