Pat and I just learned of Big Mike's passing this morning as I went to wish Leslie a happy birthday. Condolences to Leslie, Mike, Matt, Hope, and their families. He was my second III and was a great guy to work with and for. Mikey would give you the shirt off of his back and his last dollar without hesitation or question. Our best times were spent working on his favorite project, the IDOC Community Services Division Golf Tournament. It combined his love of golf with his desire to help others. Our retraining at the Academy also provided a lot of pleasant and humorous memories of Mikey that I will always cherish. RIP, Brother.

I just heard about Mike a couple of days ago. I was shocked and saddened. My condolences and prayers for the family. He was a good friend from way back. I’m so glad that we were able to have a nice visit at the recent Golden Reunion. He was his usual good natured self and was happy. I value that visit a lot.

Whenever I think of Mike, I think of the Naked Bad Guy Relay Award. Mike injured himself chasing an unclothed suspect and Leslie had Mike's leg cast bronzed and gave it to him as an award for meritorious (or dubious) service to law enforcement. Also, Mike let me try on his protective vest and police belt so I could see how heavy they are. It was eye opening. I think everyone should try them on to see, that while protecting us, cops are carrying 40 pounds of equipment. Rest in peace my friend, and thank you for your service.
