Alan E. Billhartz, 71, of Smithton, IL, born April 3, 1952, in Belleville, IL, passed peacefully on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at his home in Smithton, IL.

Alan was a 1970 graduate of Wesclin High School in Trenton, IL, and a 1986 graduate of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering. Alan served four years in the United States Air Force, where he attained the rank of Sergeant. Following his service, Alan spent over 30 years as a civil servant, where he worked as a contract specialist for the U.S. Department of Defense, before his retirement in 2010.

After his retirement, Alan continued to serve his fellow veterans and was actively involved in the Smithton American Legion GEM Post 937, where he served as Post Commander.

Alan was an avid sports fan and enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and watching Cardinals baseball. He also enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s music, theater, and sporting activities.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Leona, nee Friederich, Billhartz; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Chappy and Maggie Smith; brothers-in-law, Tom Amlung, Michael Smith, and Timothy Smith; and a sister-in-law, Barbara (Jim) Turbiville.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Deborah, nee Smith, Billhartz, whom he married February 12, 1972; a son, Gregory (Jennifer) Billhartz; a daughter, Rachel (Shannon) Peters; five grandchildren, Grace, Evan, and Liam Billhartz, and Sela and Myra Peters; two brothers, Larry (Julie) Billhartz and Patrick Billhartz; a sister, Diane (Charles) Phelps; a sister-in-law, Carol (Joe) Hooten; two brothers-in-law, Mark (Tina) Smith and Dan (Paula) Smith; along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many loving friends.

Memorials may be made to St. George Catholic Church, New Baden, IL, or to the Arch City Kids Theater Troupe. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.

Visitation:  Friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 2, 2024, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL, and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2024, at St. George Catholic Church, New Baden, IL. An American Legion GEM Post 937 ritual will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Funeral:  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2024, at St. George Catholic Church, New Baden, IL, with Fr. George Zieba officiating.

Burial with military honors will be at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, New Baden, IL.

Al was a very good friend and coworker. I will miss him emensly and regret not getting to spend much time with him, other than at work. We talked motor cycles a lot at work, i miss those times. My condolences to the family...charlie johnson.
