Albert “Rich” Dietrich

Print Obituary
Albert “Rich” Richard Dietrich, 76, of Millstadt, IL, born April 15, 1947, in Belleville, IL, died Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

Rich was born to Albert Lester and Genevieve Leota, nee Benedict, Dietrich. He always had a desire to learn starting back with St. Luke Catholic Grade School, Cathedral H.S where he graduated as part of Althoff’s inaugural graduation class.  His education path continued on to BAC but was interrupted when called to serve his country and was drafted.

He joined the Navy following in his grandfather’s, uncle’s, and father’s long history of service to our county. After several naval tours globally and supporting the Vietnam conflict, he was honorably discharged in 1974.

Upon his return to Belleville, he started a beautiful family with his wife, Ann, and began a storied career with Union Electric (UE).  During his 37 years of service with UE he attended night school to earn his degree in chemical science. He worked his way up from janitor to electrician and finished his career as a senior chemical tester when he retired in December of 2011.

Rich’s commitment to being a father and husband stood second to none. He enjoyed attending all his children’s sporting and scholastic events.  As an avid outdoorsman he had a passion for nature and cherished sharing that love with his children and grandchildren.

In his later years, Rich started his own HVAC business. This fulfilled his insatiable appetite for connecting with people and learning.  No matter the time, day, or weather, he was always there in moment’s notice for friends and family when their heating or air conditioning went out.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his son, Mathew; a brother-in-law, John Ehret; and a nephew, James Cerneka.

He is survived by his children, Philip (Melissa), Christopher (Tara), Becca (Chad), and Bradley (Allison); and his loving grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.  Rich is also survived by siblings, Steve (Fran), Paul, Sister Jean Ehret, and Jack (Cindy).

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the “Salvation Army” in support of Veterans in need. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.

Visitation:  Friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL.

Funeral:  A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO, with Msgr. William McGhee officiating.

Burial with full military honors will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.

Condolences:

Our condolences and prayers are with the Dietrich family. Will always remember the many good times we shared in the St Luke’s neighborhood-biking, playing basketball, “combat” basketball, snow sledding, adventuring down in the woods, swimming over at the city pool, etc. May the Lord God give you peace in this difficult time.
