Anthony “Tony” A. Gass, 94, of Belleville, IL, born July 5, 1928, in Belleville IL, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, Tuesday, October 4, 2022.

Tony was surrounded by a large family from the very beginning with 11 siblings. He was a deeply devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed gardening his homestead, camping with family, and teaching his children to water ski. He was passionate about world affairs and advising his grandchildren.

Tony worked as an x-ray technician, plasterer, and builder. He retired from Granite City Steel after 27 years of service. He was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church as well as the Young at Heart Club and Men’s Club.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Katherine, nee Hopfinger, Gass; six brothers, Norbert, Vincent, Edward, Marcel, Joseph, and Cletus Gass; and three sisters, Marie Braun, Catherine Garey, and Dolores Conklin.

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Wilma J., nee Martin, Gass, whom he married on July 31, 1954;
five sons, Peter (Laura) Gass, Paul (Barbara) Gass, William (Shari) Gass, Robert (Cheryl) Gass, and Jeff (Toni) Gass;
a daughter, Libby (Matt) Gass Handel;
15 grandchildren;
seven great-grandchildren;
two sisters, Juanita Wallen and Bernice Spresser;
and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be sent to St. Teresa Catholic Church or to “FIRST” (Foundation for Ichthyosis & Related Skin Types). Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.

Visitation: Friends may visit the family from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, October 10, 2022, St. Teresa Catholic Church, Belleville, IL.

Funeral: A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, October 10, 2022, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, Belleville, IL, with Fr. Joseph Oganda officiating.

Burial will be at Green Mount Catholic Cemetery, Belleville, IL, at a later date.

Sending prayers to the Gass Family. Tony was a great person, neighbor from Englewood, and a great water ski teacher (except he forgot to tell me to let go of the rope when you fall…lol).

Our. deep condolences to the Gass family. So sorry to hear of Toni's passing. I will always remember camping at Crab Orchard lake and we lived in Carbondale and came to visit. Your family was so much fun and Toni was such a nice guy. Rest in Peace
