Arlene Catherine Schaefer, nee Bertelsman, 91, of Smithton, IL, born August 2, 1925, in Belleville, IL, died Monday, February 13, 2017, at Four Fountains Convalescent Center, Belleville, IL. She recently resided at Morningside of Shiloh (formerly The Fountains of Shiloh.)

Mrs. Schaefer worked alongside her husband on their family farm.  She was a member of the St. Clair County Farm Bureau and the Catholic Fraternal Life Organization.  Arlene was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Smithton, IL, was a member of the women’s club and the ladies quilting group at the church.  She enjoyed playing cards and belonged to numerous card clubs.  Arlene enjoyed the neighborhood “Merry Widows” Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Paul J. Schaefer, whom she married on May 3, 1944, and who died on June 6, 2005; her parents, Melchior and Viola, nee Reutherman, Bertelsman; and two sisters, Sylvian (John) Schad and Verla (Bernard) Schanuel.

and Donna (Don) Hollenkamp of O’Fallon, IL;
two sons, David (Linda) Schaefer of Smithton, IL,
and Bill (Diane) Schaefer of Smithton, IL;
eleven grandchildren, Scott Daab, Jeff (Julie) Daab,
Lisa (Dale) Becherer,
Jennifer Hollenkamp,
Brian (Jennifer) Hollenkamp,
Kelly (Aaron) Fox,
Allison Schaefer,
Matthew Schaefer
Adam (Nickie) Schaefer,
Nick (Camila) Schaefer,
and Jillian (Kyle) Holdener,
13 great-grandchildren, Amanda (Derek) Martin,
Tanner Daab,
Hannah and Levi Daab,
Sawyer and Lily Becherer,
Will and Max Hollenkamp,
Eli Fox,
Blake, Lucas, and Chloe Schaefer,
and Addison Holdener;
and one great-great-grandchild, Jameson Martin.

Visitation:  Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, February 19, 2017, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Smithton, IL.

Funeral:  Funeral procession will leave at 9:45 a.m. Monday, February 20, 2017, from George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Smithton, IL, for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Smithton, IL, with Fr. Stanley Konieczny officiating.

Burial will be at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Smithton, IL.
