Cheryl Lynne Triefenbach, nee Walton, 74, of Smithton, IL, formerly of Belleville, IL, born January 10, 1944, in Decatur, IL, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 14, 2018.

After graduating from Mendota High School and Illinois State University, Cheryl began her career as a speech therapist for New Athens and St. Libory school districts.  She then spent 24 years as a speech therapist, LD/BD, and 1st grade teacher for Cahokia Unit School District #187. She was a long-time member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Belleville, IL, as well as Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority and the Junior Service Club of St. Clair County.  Cheryl was a co-chair for the District 201 Gender Equity Board, and a reader for MindsEye.

Mrs. Triefenbach was a sports enthusiast who coached eight years for the Belle-Clair Soccer League, as well as four years for the seventh grade basketball team at Central Junior High School, Belleville, IL.  She was a competitive tennis player who could often be found on the courts at Westhaven Bath and Tennis Club.

Cheryl was a loving wife and mother, and a doting grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hubert W. and Mary Marvene, nee Marlow, Walton; a brother, Ronald Walton; and her mother-in-law, Mildred Louise Triefenbach.

She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, LeRoy “Lee” Triefenbach, whom she married May 31, 1969;
two daughters, Tara Lyn Triefenbach of Frankfort, IL, and Marnie Leigh (Erik) Herrling of San Leandro, CA;
two beloved grandchildren, Sydney and Camryn Herrling;
two brothers, Tim (Diane) Walton of Sullivan, IL, and Tom (Terri) Walton of Olathe, KS;
a sister-in-law, Emma Lee (Albert) Wunderlich of Swansea, IL;
numerous nieces and nephews;
many cousins;
and friends.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.

Visitation and Memorial Service will occur on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home in Belleville, IL.  Friends may visit from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.  Memorial Service to occur at 1 p.m. with burial at Valhalla Gardens of Memory immediately following.

To Lee and the girls, I remember Cheryl fondly when I babysat for Tara and Marnie. She was always warm, friendly, and made me feel at home. I was sorry to hear of her passing! Take care and God Bless you all during this difficult time. Diane

I am very sorry to learn of Cheryl's passing. She was a good friend who was fun to work with in Cahokia. She was very dedicated to her students and loved her family very much! My prayers are with all of you.

I’m so sorry to hear about Cheryl’s passing. I was Cheryl’s roommate when we were both single speech therapists not long out of college. Her photo shows that same friendly smile I remember from all those years ago. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family at this difficult time.

So sorry for you loss, Lee and family. It was a shock. I will miss my cousin and childhood playmate. We would be at the services Saturday but, unfortunately, we have a family obligation that we simply can't miss.
