David Winston Bowles, 86, of Belleville, IL, born March 10, 1937, in Martins Ferry, OH, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at Elmwood Care Center, Maryville, IL, with family by his side.

David graduated from Salem High School in Ohio in 1955, attended Letourneau College in Texas before joining the US Air Force and becoming an engineering draftsman. David went on to various drafting positions after the Air Force that included McDonnel Douglas working on the F15, White Rodgers Controls, and finally retired from Wagner Electric.  David was an avid motorcycle enthusiast his entire life and shared his enthusiasm with his sons which lasts to this day. He loved to work as a hobbyist in his workshops all the way up to his passing. David enjoyed playing and watching sports, was a standout track and field runner as well as a starter on the baseball team in high school. David used these experiences to coach all his boys in their various sports endeavors and then continued as an avid spectator as his sons moved on to more advanced levels of competition. David especially loved to help build the pine wood derby cars with his boys when they were in Boy Scouts. David’s pine wood derby skills were a direct result of his successful soapbox derby career in Salem and Akron, Ohio as a young teenager in the early 1950’s.

David is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Virginia; his parents, Frank and Edith Bowles (Phillips); a son, Michael; and infant grandsons, Joshua and Nicolas Bowles.

He is survived by three sons, John (Judy) Bowles of Buckeye, AZ, Steven Bowles of Belleville, IL, and Thomas (Angela) Bowles of Glen Carbon, IL; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
