David Smith

Print Obituary
David K. Smith, 66, of Freeburg, IL, born, February 12, 1955, in Belleville, IL, died Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at his residence.

David was a 1973 graduate of Freeburg Community High School and held an associate degree in Law Enforcement from Belleville Area College.  He was retired from a career as a salesman for Towers Fire Apparatus, Crescent Electric Supply Company and Graybar.  He also worked at Curt Smith Sporting Goods and E.M. Wiegmann.

David was proficient at competitive shooting having achieved the High-Master classification and earned the Distinguished Rifleman Badge through the civilian marksmanship program.  This program traces its lineage to 1903 and President Theodore Roosevelt under the management of the Department of War and then the Department of the Army.  David was a member of the 4-man team which holds the National Record for the Mid-Range (600 yard) Team Course Competition with an Open High Master Record Score of 800 – 49X at Bucksnort Shooting Club.

David was a member of Grace Doctrine Church in St. Charles, Missouri.

Most importantly, David placed his faith in the work of Our Lord Jesus Christ on the cross and His substitutionary spiritual death for our sins, providing salvation for all mankind.  Having accepted this gracious gift by faith alone in Christ alone, David is the possessor of eternal life and is now in heaven and face-to-face with the Lord.

“For God loved the world so much that He gave His uniquely born Son, that whosever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lavern E. “Snuffy” and Doris Mae, nee Borger, Smith.

He is survived by a brother, Timothy E. (Melinda) Smith of Columbia, IL.

The family would like to give special thanks to the Freeburg Police Department and the EMT’s for their help and support.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Greater St. Louis Honor Flight. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.

Private cremation services and burial will be held.

The family will observe a future memorial service on a date to be determined.

Condolences:

It’s been many years since I last saw Dave. We used to see each other frequently at rifle matches but since I haven’t been able to compete we lost touch. My sympathies to Tim and the rest of the family. Rest in peace cousin.

Just met David this past Easter. He came to visit four times since meeting. Spent Thanksgiving and Christmas together in the foot hills of the Ozarks. He kept saying "this is perfect". Now he knows perfection. He is missed

Tim and Melinda, Jane and I want to express our condolences. Dave and I road together to rifle matches for over 20 years. That included matches in a number of states including the National Matches at Camp Perry Ohio. He was always upbeat and fun to travel with. I will truly miss Dave but it is comforting to know he was a believer and we will meet again some day. Ken and Jane

Dave was superb but humble competitor that never missed a rifle match at Bucksnort Shooting Club. We shared many, many weekends at the range. He will be missed.
