Dennis Guetterman

Print Obituary
Dennis Henry Guetterman, 76, of Belleville, Ill., born November 1, 1943, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, August 15, 2020 surrounded by his loving family.

Many may know Dennis from his 50-year career as a financial consultant at Newhard Cook & Company. Over the years the company name may have changed (Advest, Hilliard Lyons), but Dennis never changed the way he took care of his clients. He was always honest and compassionate with every customer that came into his office helping them both financially and emotionally.

After retirement in 2017, Dennis and his wife, Sue,  traveled extensively in Europe, South America, and the Caribbean including Cuba. They spent their 50th wedding anniversary in Lisbon, Portugal. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, yard work, monthly lunches with his Cathedral Class of 1961 buddies, weekly dinners with friends (before the pandemic), and pickle ball.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Linus and Violet (nee Etling) Guetterman, and his stepfather, James Eichholz.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Sue, nee Hafner, Guetterman;
his children, Michelle (Jason) Kolman of O’Fallon, IL, and Scott (Jenny) Guetterman of O’Fallon, IL;
and his grandchildren, Leslie Kolman, Kylie and Derek Guetterman.

The family would like to thank Guillermo Rodriguez, MD, and Ramaswamy Govindan, MD, at Siteman Cancer Center and the staff at Hospice of Southern Illinois for their excellent and compassionate medical care.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or the American Cancer Society. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.

It was Dennis’ wish that there be no public visitation or service. Following cremation, he will be buried at Lake View Memorial Gardens in Fairview Heights, IL.

Condolences:

My deepest sympathy to Dennis' family. Went to Cathedral HS with Dennis. Have not seen him in many years other then briefly at last class reunion. However, will always remember Dennis as a caring and kind person. He always wore a warm smile. If there is a "good guy" club in Heaven Dennis is surely in it. Deepest Condolences.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Dennis. Our sincere condolences to Sue and her entire family. I have nothing but great memories and the pleasure of growing up alongside Denny in the same neighborhood. Most of our activities centered around playing sports and ending up at Blome's gas station trying to grab the last 16 oz. soda before anyone else did. While the rest of us were collecting baseball cards, Denny was getting a head start on his financial career by saving all of the Buffalo/Indian Head nickels he could get his hands on. He always had a great smile and it never showed brighter than on the day he drove his new 60's Chevy convertible straight from the dealership to our house. Quiet, reserved and always the perfect Gentleman. May Denny and my brother Joel reunite their friendship in a better place. Dennis will be truly missed by so many people.

I am so thankful to have had Dennis as my uncle. Though our visits were not often enough, I always felt so close to him when we were together. His deep love of family, thoughtful calm and his incredible tall smile that beamed through his jewel eyes made me feel so warm and loved. In Dennis and Sue’s kitchen is where I spent my most memorable times while visiting from Seattle. We would discuss just about everything tell fun family stories and have SO many laughs. His whit was quick -- smart and not mean-spirited. Dennis would impart so much clarity and thoughtfulness to our conversations and I often thought what a perfect fit he was for his work life as an investment advisor - as a trusted voice, wonderful listener, and empathetic guide. One bonding moment I had with Dennis was the evening in that kitchen where I saw him put a bowl of ice cream in the microwave (just for a few seconds) and I thought I was the only one who did that! I wondered if it was really him I was related to (Sue is my mom’s sister, but I would be honored to take genetic credit from Dennis any day too)! Above all, his love for his family was unmatchable. He listened intently to all of us, but it felt to me like he hung on Sue’s words in a way that only a life long love would. His children and grandchildren were his joy and so much of him is in them. We aspire to be like the Guetterman family in so many ways. Dennis will be missed by us deeply. Sue and family, we send you hugs and love from here to you and hope to be together again soon. In the meantime, our prayers continue to be with you, as always. I have taught our kids to enjoy melting their ice cream just slightly and to think of our Uncle Dennis when we do. It seems they may have inherited his ice cream melting genes too.
