Print Obituary
Dennis K. Schickedanz, 77, of Belleville, IL, born April 25, 1946, in Belleville, IL, died Saturday, February 10, 2024, at Mercy Hospital, St. Louis, MO.

Dennis graduated from Belleville West High School and was a high school math teacher. In his retirement years, he truly enjoyed subbing in the Mascoutah School District.

Dennis was a lifelong basketball fan. He shared his love for basketball with his best friends, Bud Wolke and Larry Graham. A famous quote Dennis used often was “You will always miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” He was a staunch supporter of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. He attended as many IBCA events as possible and was a member of the IBCA Southwestern Illinois Larry Graham Hall of Fame Committee and the Southwestern Illinois Dave Shannahan Golf Committee. “Schick,” as he was fondly known, started the Superfan Shootout and continued organizing showcase basketball events for the rest of his life. He was the greatest basketball Superfan.

Dennis was also a board member and instructor of the West County Swing Dance Club for two years, the Music Swing Club for several years, and the “Let’s Swing” dance class for the past four years. He thoroughly enjoyed teaching dance.

Above all else, Dennis adored his dear children and grandchildren and loved spending time with them. He always made the effort to make it to all the grandchildren’s different events over the years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Violet, nee Hacker, Schickedanz.

He is survived by a son, Dene Schickedanz (Christi Longnecker) of Edwardsville, IL; their four children, Landen, Spencer and Ryder Schickedanz, and Jackson Garman; a daughter, Elizabeth (Matt) Hancock of Mascoutah, IL; their four children, Abby, Madison, Sophia, and Luke Jefferson Hancock; a sister, Karen (Don) McNeill; two nieces, Shannon (Brian) Thompson and Jennifer (Tim) Froemling; great-nieces and great-nephews; cousins; and many other dear family members.

To the family and friends of my neighbor Dennis, I send my most sincere thoughts and prayers to you all for your loss. I am saddened by the news. He certainly was a lovely person. I unfortunately stumbled on the obituary while researching for funeral services of another person. This is devastating. I pray you all find solace in your beautiful memories of such a great man. I will certainly miss his smile and funny conversations.

Dennis was one of the sweetest men I have come to meet in our dance community. When I first was elected to the Board, he welcomed me with open arms and a GREAT smile! We had many warm conversations. He was so very proud of his Family and was always excited about what was happening with his grandkids. Danny, Dennis and I worked the early shift putting out the equipment for our dances. We always played, laughed, joked and teased each other, which made the work enjoyable! It was such fun, because of his funny disposition and silly quips. I will miss him, as will all of us in the dance community. He was one in a million, for sure. God bless your family as you navigate this sudden loss, but rest assured he is happily watching from beyond and loves you all!

Our deepest condolences go out to the Schickedanz Family. Not only was Dennis our friend, we got to serve on the MUSIC board with him. There's a bible verse that displays what kind of gentleman he was, it goes like this. You are a light in the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket. Instead they put it on a lampstand where it gives light to everyone in the house. Dennis will be greatly missed.

As PDU president, he was legendary! The Valentine’s party was his favorite and he always made sure every female member got a red rose. When I came into town every year, he made it a point to come by in his red corvette and take me to lunch. I thank him for introducing me to the West County Swing Dance club. He will be missed sorely.
