Was blessed to know Grandma for almost 20 years. She was Grandma to Mike Lyke, my nephew-in-law, and to her other lucky grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Even though she wasn’t my grandmother, I also called her Grandma because she made me feel like part of her family. She was a ray of sunshine in my life and in the lives of so many others. Grandma once told me that she had started a lending library in her house. To me this was typical of the way she lived her life. Grandma loved to share her blessings, she loved to help people, she loved to make people happy, and she loved to learn. She also loved to teach, at least in later years, and created wonderful Black History Month displays each February for her senior residence in Arizona. She wanted others to appreciate the accomplishments of African-American civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King as well as African-American authors, statesmen, musicians, scientists, and artists. She admired them all, but I think she had a special place in her heart for Barack Obama. Whenever I think of Grandma, I think of her powerful love first and foremost, especially for her family, but I also think of her smile, her laugh, her sense of humor, and her style – especially her famous hats. Last but not least, I think of the mountain of family photos she collected so she could watch her family grow and keep them all close by. Once in a while, God sends someone special to earth to cheer the weary heart, to demonstrate the power of love, and teach us how to be better human beings - Doris Reynolds Lyke was one of those special people. My deepest sympathy to Grandma Lyke’s entire family. May she rest in peace and may perpetual light shine upon her.

Dear Doris Ann, Virgil, Bill and Family, Your Momma was the Best! Doris always had a welcoming smile that lit up a room and a voice that invited you in to chat. She made you feel loved. My husband Bob, the oldest of 7, shared many stories about both Gilbert and Doris. Bob was shadowing Gilbert as he was working on home improvements and Gilbert was so patient with him, Bob then a curious boy, was following him as he installed insulation in the attic and Gilbert had this little boy bugging him in a tight area. My favorite story is about how Doris comforted Bob's little sister when she was crying. She held her gently on her lap and soothed her, making everything better. Doris welcomed the children home from school and took time to listen to little ones that needed to be heard. Doris will be sorely missed by our family but her stories will live on in ours. Thank you Doris for helping to rear my husband and helping to mold him into the kind man he is today. With Sincere Sympathy, Bob & Bridget

I am lucky enough to have heard many stories about both Doris and Gilbert and how awesome it was to have them in their lives. Then my favorite story is about Doris comforting the younger children and holding them close and easing their pain. I met Doris when I became the coordinator of religious education at St. Luke’s! She was so excited to become a part of Vacation Bible School so she could include her grandchildren! Our paths continued to grow and I became a teacher and Jefferson School. I reached out to Dorisz( and those who knew and loved her) she could never say NO! She touched so many lives until she parted to sunny pastures in Arizona-May she Rest In Peace!!!

I meet Mrs Doris in March of 2019 and we instantly became friends and pen pals. I was in awe of her, at 99 yrs of age she was so sharp. We corresponded with letters and pictures and newspapers clippings ( She would send me the latest happenings in Phoenix). What a beautiful lady, that I will always remember. My deepest condolences to her family.
