Doris F. Obernagel, nee Schlueter, 91, of Smithton, born Sept. 30, 1932, in Freeburg, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, at BJC Memorial Hospital, Shiloh.

Doris was an active member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Freeburg. She was a very religious person known for hugs and prayers for anyone who needed them. She had a keen interest in agriculture and her huge, beautiful vegetable gardens looked like a photo out of a magazine. Doris was known for her cooking and award-winning baking. She was a generous soul sharing her bounty.

She was preceded by her husband, George W. Obernagel Jr., whom she married on Sept. 9, 1952, and who died on Sept. 17, 1985. She was also preceded by her parents, Walter and Alma Schlueter; twin sisters, Nora and Cora Klingelhoefer; and sister, Opal (Walter) Linss.

Surviving relatives include a son, George W. Obernagel III of Waterloo; a daughter Helen Obernagel of New Athens; along with many cousins and friends.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul UCC-Freeburg, the FFA chapter of their choice, or to donor’s choice. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com

Private visitation and funeral services will be held, with arrangements handled by George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL.

Burial will be at Valhalla Gardens of Memory, Belleville, IL.
