Dorothy Rose Czerniejewski, 88, of Smithton, IL, born November 29, 1935, in Washington County, IL, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at her residence with her family by her side.

Dorothy was a homemaker and a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Smithton, IL.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter L. Czerniejewski, whom she married on February 13, 1956, and who died on April 13, 2015; her parents, John and Rose Barczewski; three brothers, John, Mike, and Eugene Barczewski; three sisters, Veronica Kruczek, Ann Maszka, and Sophie Kostecki; and two half-sisters, Nellie Kozuszek and Martha Jankowski.

Left to mourn her passing are her seven children, Phyllis (Michael) Martin of Red Bud, IL, Jeanette (Robert) Niedbalski of Smithton, IL, Michael Czerniejewski of St. Peters, MO, Paul (Rebecca) Czerniejewski of Swansea, IL, John Czerniejewski of Smithton, IL, Alice (Paul) Quirin of Smithton, IL, and Mark (Rebecca) Czerniejewski of Waterloo, IL; 13 grandchildren, Tim Martin, Sarah (Ben) Rosenberg, Emily (Matthew) Day, Thomas Czerniejewski, Trevor (Taylor) Czerniejewski, Jordan (Clare) Czerniejewski, Alexander, Jessica, and Joshua Erwin, Roman and Cecilia Czerniejewski, and Anna and Lily Czerniejewski; six great-grandchildren, Ezra, Frankie, Everett, Fisher, Macy, and Moriah; two step-grandsons, David and Steven Quirin; one brother, Leo (Shirley) Barczewski; two sisters-in-law, Esther Barczewski and Lucille Nadolski; one brother-in-law, Albert (Maxine) Czerniejewski; numerous nieces and nephews; and other relatives.

Should friends desire, Mass offerings or memorials may be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Condolences may be expressed online at

Visitation: No public visitation will be held.

Funeral: A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Smithton, IL, with Fr. Stan Konieczny officiating.

Burial will follow at Green Mount Catholic Cemetery, Belleville, IL.

I remember Aunt Dorothy as always smiling and happy. I think her love of her family and her deep faith kept her strong. Our sincere condolences to all the Czerniejewski family. Aunt Dorothy is now an Angel in heaven surrounded by hummingbirds. Love, Karol An & Philip Meier

So sorry for the loss of your mother. Dorothy was a kind soul and treasured all of you. She made raising a family her greatest endeavor. May she rest in peace and be with Walter now. Jane and Chris Eagon
