Elverna M. Voelkel, nee Bening, 93, of Belleville, IL, born September 27, 1930, in Okawville, IL, died Monday, March 18, 2024, at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, IL.

Elverna was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, Belleville, IL. She was a past deacon, youth leader with her husband Clyde, and enjoyed singing in the choir. Elverna was a Girl Scout leader and a member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. In later years she participated in making blankets for the Linus Blankets group at church.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 43 years, Clyde L. Voelkel, who she married on May 4, 1957, and who died on November 5, 2000; her parents, William W. and Adele, nee Tepe, Bening; two brothers, Norbert Bening and Wayne Bening; a brother-in-law, F.J “Charlie” Voelkel; two sisters-in-law, Helen Voelkel and Carolyn Bening; a nephew, David Bening; and a niece, Susan Bening.

She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl A. (Michael) Weidman and Denise C. Voelkel; two granddaughters, Carly and Mari Weidman; a brother, Dennis Bening; a sister-in-law, LaVerne Bening; and many dear nieces and nephews.

Visitation:  Friends may visit from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, March 22, 2024, at Zion Lutheran Church, Belleville, IL.

Funeral:  Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 22, 2024, at Zion Lutheran Church Belleville, IL.

Burial will be at Valhalla Gardens of Memory, Belleville, IL.

It was a joy and honor to come to Elverna's home and minister to her for these many years. She joyfully and gladly heard the word of her Savior and always made a good witness to her faith. I will miss visiting her.

Praying for your families comfort and peace . I went to Zion and my mom and Elverna were GS leaders. Our lives have touched through the years. She will be remembered with fond memories and love
