Fred was a civil engineer, having both undergraduate (University of Illinois) and master’s degrees (University of Missouri-St. Louis). He was active in this profession for almost forty years, with more than three-quarters of that time with the Illinois Department of Transportation. Fred was also very active in the professional community, holding various leadership positions in these organizations.
Fred was an outdoorsman, enjoying many different activities with his friends. He and his wife Carol were also always thrilled to spend time together with their friends, including their bridge playing groups which spanned decades.
Above all else, Fred was devout in his faith in God and loved his family. He was extensively involved in Peace Lutheran Church Belleville, and more recently attended Zion Lutheran Church Belleville. And Fred was guaranteed to come to any activity where he was invited by his children, particularly to watch the sports and other activities of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Marjorie, nee Shirley, Bartelsmeyer.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Carol, nee Harmening, Bartelsmeyer, whom he married on August 25, 1956, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, in New Minden, Illinois;
two sons, Frederick Bartelsmeyer (Manuela Keller-Bartelsmeyer), and Jim (Helen) Bartelsmeyer; a daughter, Karen Bartelsmeyer;
six grandchildren, Amos, Tilman, Andrew, Alex (Rachel), and Chris (Megan) Bartelsmeyer; and Caroline (Nolan) Johnson;
two great-granddaughters, Olivia and Ellery;
