Geneva “Jean” Cates, nee Alexander, 87, of Freeburg, IL, born September 2, 1929, in Osage Beach, MO, passed away Sunday, January 8, 2017, at Freeburg Care Center, Freeburg, IL.

Mrs. Cates was a banquet server at The Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows and thoroughly enjoyed her many years of service there. She was a hard-working woman and was loved by everyone she touched.  She was a wonderful and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Dorothy, nee Scott, Alexander; and several siblings.

Surviving are eight children, Charles (Terri) Cruse and family,
Ronald Cruse,
Carol (Stephen) Riley Jr. and family,
Artie (Sandy) Cates and family,
Brenda (Duane) Determan and family,
Bryan (Tina) Cates and family,
Kimberley (Scott) Campbell and family,
Karen (Mike) Blank and family,
and her special dog, Odis.

Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice.  Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.

Visitation:  Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 11, 2017,  and from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday, January 12, 2017 at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL.

Funeral:  A Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 12, 2017, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL, with Rev. Greg Doussard officiating.  Burial will be at St. Clair Memorial Park, Fairview Heights, IL.

I worked with Gene at the Shrine for many years. I referred to her as “Gene Machine”, she was like the energizer bunny, just kept going. Simply put, she is one of the finest people I have ever met in my life. Just a top notch human being. I’m sorry for your loss. God Bless.

Geneva was the most giving wonderful I could have met.We raised most of our children together.Allthe football and cheer leader practices.WE became good friends.Our kids wher best friends and remained so forever.I am so soory for their loss. Love you kids
