Helen E. Thoma, nee North, 70, of Freeburg, IL, born July 20, 1948, in Red Bud, IL, died Thursday, August 9, 2018, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, O’Fallon, IL.

Mrs. Thoma worked as a cashier for Schnucks before her retirement.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis L. Thoma, whom she married on December 9, 1967, and who died on May 7, 2001; her parents, James S. and Catherine, nee Walters, North; two sisters, Shirley Morris and Doris M. Davis; and a brother, James B. North.

Surviving are her two sons, Dennis L. (Amy) Thoma Jr. of Freeburg, IL, and Jimmy Thoma of Freeburg;
two granddaughters, Lauren Thoma and Hadleigh Thoma;
a grandson, Vincent Thoma;
numerous nieces, nehews, cousins, friends;
and her best friend, Mary Casey.

Memorials may be made to The Life Skills Class at Freeburg Community High School. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.

Visitation:  Friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, August 12, 2018, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Freeburg, IL, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday, August 13, 2018, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Freeburg, IL.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 13, 2018, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Freeburg, IL, with Fr. Mark Reyling officiating.

Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Freeburg, IL.

Dennis, Jimmy and Lauren, my heart is heavy. I am so sorry for your loss. I have always looked at Helen as a second mother. Heken will be missed by many. She always knew how to turn someone's bad day into a good day. Thank you for sharing your mother with us. God Bless you all as you take the time to heal.

Helen was so wonderful! I used to take my own kids when they were little to see her talking birds all the time. When she worked at Schnucks she would wait for the claw machine to be easy pickings and then play it and save trash bags full of stuffed animals to donate to the treasure box I kept for the kids in my class. They all loved her. I loved her and still do. Love you, Helen!
