James “Jim” Erwin Wehrheim, 88, of Swansea, IL, born February 25, 1935, in Belleville, IL, died Monday, January 29, 2024, at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, IL.

Jim graduated from Cathedral High School in Belleville, and subsequently from Saint Louis University in Saint Louis, where he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in accounting.  For 30 years Jim thrived as a Special Agent with the United States Treasury Department, an exciting occupation that saw him participate in, as well as spearhead, multiple high profile criminal investigations in Southern Illinois.  Following his retirement from the Federal Government, the Illinois State Police created a special position for Jim within the Metropolitan Enforcement Group of Southwestern Illinois (MEGSI), adding another 8 years to his distinguished career in law enforcement.  Jim was a lifetime member of the Illinois Police Association.

A dedicated parishioner at St. Henry Catholic Church in Belleville, and a past president of the St. Henry Men’s Club, Jim was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1028, served as Grand Knight of Council 2964, and received his 4th Degree of 199, including the special honor of holding the title of “Sir Knight”.  He was an avid fan of Saint Louis University Billikens basketball, the former St. Louis Cardinals football team, and St. Louis Cardinals baseball.  Jim enjoyed golf, traveling, and playing cards with his high school friends, a tradition shared for over 50 years.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Erwin J. and Margaret M., nee McDade, Wehrheim; and a brother-in-law, Edward Dollus.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Judy A., nee Odle, Wehrheim, whom he married on September 1, 1962; two sons, James Wehrheim [Lily Witaszek], and Joseph Wehrheim; two grandchildren, Freya and Phineas Wehrheim; a sister, Peggy Dollus; and other dear family members.
