Jean Ann Zipfel, nee Phillips, 88, of Freeburg, IL, born February 1, 1929, in Freeburg, IL, died Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at her residence.

Mrs. Zipfel was a lifelong resident of Freeburg, IL.  She was a member of the Freeburg High School Class of 1946, and over the years frequently planned their class reunions, including the most recent 70 year reunion.  She worked at Mercantile Bank in St. Louis, was a telephone operator in Freeburg, and retired from Burgards Store where she was a clerk.

Jean was a member of the St Clair County Association for Home and Community Education (HCE), the Historical Society, the Senior Citizen’s Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Sportsman’s Club. An avid card player and bowler, Jean Ann belonged to three card clubs and was a former member of the 600 bowling club. She was a former member and assistant director of the Sweet Adeline’s and JMS Quartet. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Freeburg and served as the pianist, organist, and choir director at the church for 34 years. Most of all, she loved her grandchildren and attending their many activities.  Jean Ann also adored her great-grandchildren.  They were all the light of her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Roger J. “Zip” Zipfel, whom she married on April 30, 1949, and who died January 11, 1997; her parents, John B. and Grace, nee Spitznass, Phillips; and a brother, John R. Phillips.

Surviving are two sons, Phillip (Lesia) Zipfel
and Gregory (Linda) Zipfel, both of Freeburg, IL;
five grandchildren, Stephanie and Jason Zipfel,
David (Kari) Zipfel,
Andrea (Ryan) Fischer,
and Daniel Zipfel;
three great-grandchildren, Sophia Grace Zipfel,
Noah Jackson Zipfel,
And Levi Grayson Zipfel;
sisters-in-law, Barbara Winterbauer and Holly Zipfel;
and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Hospice of Southern Illinois.  Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.

Visitation:  Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 24, 2017, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Freeburg, IL, and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2017, at First Baptist Church, Freeburg, IL.

Funeral:  Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2017, at First Baptist Church, Freeburg, IL, with Rev. James Jenkel officiating.

Burial will be at Valhalla Gardens of Memory, Belleville, IL.
