Joseph Leroy Schaefer, 93, of Swansea, IL, born February 15, 1923, in Smithton, IL, died Monday, July 18, 2016, at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, IL.

Mr. Schaefer worked for Swift & Company for 43 years before his retirement.  He was a member of St. Augustine of Canterbury Catholic Church, Belleville, IL, where he was a member of the “Men of St. Joseph” men’s club. Joseph thoroughly enjoyed spending time with friends and family, and especially enjoyed his time at Fountains of Shiloh, where he made many new friends.  He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Dorothy Mary, nee Falbe, Schaefer, whom he married on September 16, 1947, and who died on August 12, 2012; his parents, Jacob Jr. and Bertha, nee Schilling, Schaefer; two sisters, Lucille (Charlie) Pauketat and Betty Vernier; four brothers, Oliver Schaefer, Victor (Loretta) Schaefer, Clement (Rita) Schaefer, and Leon (Shirley) Schaefer; one sister-in-law, Vera Schaefer; and one brother-in-law, Marcellus Fehlker.

Gary (Phyllis) Schaefer of Millstadt, IL,
and Ron (Cindy) Schaefer of Shiloh, IL;

Lauren (Joe) Schaefer-Christ,
Dan (Erin) Schaefer, Michael Schaefer,
Todd (Kyra) Schaefer, Kyle (Shaundra) Schaefer,
Robin (Ross) Schaefer-Klucker,
Kelly (Travis) Sarka-Brown,
Jaime Sarka,
Ben (Erin) Schaefer,
Nick (Jennifer) Schaefer,
and Josh Schaefer;
15 great-grandchildren
one brother, Clarence Schaefer of Belleville, IL;
one sister, Verdell Fehlker of Belleville, IL
two sisters-in-law, Norma J. Schaefer of Lenzburg, IL;
and Carol Schaefer of Red Bud, IL;
one brother-in-law, John Vernier;
and nieces and nephews.

Visitation:  Friends may visit with the family 4 to 8 P.M. Thursday, July 21, 2016, at St. Augustine of Canterbury Catholic Church, Belleville, IL.

Funeral: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9 A.M. Friday, July 22, 2016, at St. Augustine of Canterbury Catholic Church, Belleville, IL, with Msgr. William McGhee officiating.
Burial with military honors will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.
