Madeline was the youngest of four sisters: Betty who lost both legs to disease but never lost her sense of humor, would hold court from her bed in the front room of the house on Sterling Av in Yonkers, just up from St Barnabas Church. Clara, the oldest used to slip us small dishes of the custard she made for their father, my mom’s Uncle Rob. She had the beautiful white curly hair of her mother, Elizabeth Leis Neumann. Jo was the liveliest and closest to Madeleine. She shared the move to Belleville after Betty and then Clara died. Growing up, the Neumann girls and their parents lived upstairs from their Frey cousins: George who fought in WWI, Madeline who was a second mother to the younger siblings, Fred who was ordained a priest, was elevated to Monsenior and ran a parish in the Catskills the size of Manhattan Island, Bill named after his father who became president of the Chemical Bank of New York, Henry who managed Mayflower Moving, and Kathryn, my mom, named after Aunt Lizzie’s sister, Katharine Leis Frey. The house was a brownstone built by my Grandpa Frey at 1226 Tinton Av, in the then-countryside of the South Bronx. There was a garden in the back yard and they made alter breads for St Anthony of Padua Church in the basement. What a wonderful time they must all have had. They were always close. We grew up sharing holidays, laughter, and family stories. The Neumann girls were all 3rd order Franciscans, distinguished in life not by habits and veils, but by the lives they lived. Madeline was the last of that generation. They were much loved and are much missed. Now they are together. Rest In Peace.
