Marianne Buettner

Print Obituary
Marianne Buettner, nee Winter, 79, of Belleville, IL, born July 29, 1943, in Belleville, IL, passed away peacefully the morning of Thursday, June 29, 2023, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, O’Fallon, IL, with family by her side.

Marianne attended St. Henry’s Grade School, graduated from Academy of Notre Dame in 1961, and took classes at Belleville Area College after high school. She worked at Scott Air Force Base where she met Philip William Buettner. On January 11, 1964, they married and shared their love for life for 51 years, together raising six beautiful children.

It is hard to put into words all that she accomplished throughout her 79 years and the amazing relationships she developed with so many friends along the way. Nothing in life rivaled Marianne’s love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  She dedicated her life to raising and enjoying her kids as well as taking care of many children in the neighborhood. She loved all of her children’s friends as her own.  She took that same enthusiasm into her role as a grandmother, proudly wearing the nickname “Grandma B”, “Maw-Maw”, and later “Bacaw”. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life.

Marianne worked as an election judge for many years in Belleville. She volunteered through the years at the Interfaith Food Pantry, participated in many programs and events at Program and Services for Older Persons (PSOP), and quilted countless blankets for children through Linus Blankets.  She loved a good ‘spontaneous’ adventure and loved to travel with her husband and children visiting all 50 states throughout the years. She enjoyed cooking and baking but savored it even more when her children cooked for her. She never met a stranger and thoroughly appreciated conversing with anyone that would stop to talk, especially her neighbors and friends on her front porch. She liked winning while playing cards with many friends, crocheting, quilting, visiting with loved ones, and, most importantly, laughing.  She established relationships with so many people in ways that most would only dream of experiencing.

She was, and always will be, a loving and strong but gentle mother and mother-in-law, an educator, a devoted wife, an amazingly proud grandmother and great-grandmother, the biggest White Cottage fan, and the famous “Hat Lady”. Her faith never wavered, even through the hardest of times, and she would want us all to remember that “You are Blessed” and that “God is Good”.

Marianne was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Philip William Buettner, who passed away January 31, 2015; her daughter, Pamela Buescher; her granddaughter, Elaina Buescher; her parents, Kenneth and Sylvia, nee Schaefer, Winter; and many wonderful brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; aunts and uncles.

She will be forever missed by her children and the families of her three sons, two daughters, and son-in-law, Brian (Denise) Buettner of Belleville, IL, Michael (Jo Ann) Buettner of Belleville, IL, Lisa Wienhoff of Geneva, IL, Janelle Kozsdiy of Belleville, IL, Eric (Katie) Buettner of O’Fallon, IL, and Brian Buescher of Belleville, IL; 17 grandchildren, Renee (Matt) Warmbrodt, Megan, Kevin, Aaron, and Kayla Buettner, Justin, Jill Ann, and Jacob Buettner, Emily and Ethan Wienhoff, Anna and Norah Buescher, Lilah, Havannah, and Isaiah Kozsdiy, Philip and Adia Buettner; three great-grandchildren Bennett, Caroline, and Mallory Warmbrodt; two brothers, Jerome Winter of Freeburg, IL, David Winter of Belleville, IL; two sisters-in-law, Ruby Buettner of Belleville, IL and Mary Lou (Bob) Carter of Brighton, IL; and a brother-in-law, Charles Hukel of Belleville, IL; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations to be made in memory of Marianne Buettner to: Zion Linus Blankets at 1810 McClintock Avenue, Belleville, IL 62221, or Family Hospice at 5110 West Main Street, Belleville, IL 62226. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.

Visitation: Friends may visit with family from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, July 29, 2023, at St. Luke Catholic Church, Belleville, IL.

Funeral: A memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 29, 2023, at St. Luke Catholic Church, Belleville, IL, with Fr. Clyde Grogan officiating. Coffee and donuts will follow mass.

A private burial will be held at a later date at Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery, Belleville, IL.

Condolences:

So saddened to hear of Marianne’s passing. I knew her as a fellow classmate at AND, then as a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Through all the years and sorrows she always maintained a positive outlook and of course, her sweet smile.

I don’t know how to describe my sorrow over the loss of Marianne. She was the dearest person in the world. She was the porch queen of Olive Street where she ruled with laughter and so much love. The “Olive Street Gang” mothers will never be the same without her. My sympathy and love to you all.

I was so saddened to hear of Marianne’s passing. She was very special. I live across the street from her. I loved spending time with her, on the front porch. We would laugh for hours, mostly silly stuff. I just loved her, and her wackiness. I’m so grateful I got to spend time with her one last visit, and and my recent hospital visit. She talked so much about the kids, and grandchildren, and said how blessed she was. She was so proud. Out of habit, I still look for her on the porch, first thing every morning. We had a special friendship, and I so cherish the memories. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family. ❤️

I OFTEN THINK That people we have loved and who have loved us NOT ONLY MAKE US MORE HUMAN BUT THEY BECOME PART OF US And we carry them around ALL THE TIME Whether we see them or not… And in some way WE ARE THE SUM TOTAL OF THOSE WHO HAVE LOVED US And those WE HAVE GIVEN OURSELF TOO.
