In her earlier years, Mrs. Birkner had worked as a bookkeeper and a real estate agent. She was a former member of Redeemer United Church of Christ, St. Louis, MO.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Howard J. Birkner, whom she married on July 12, 1942, and who died on December 27, 1997; her parents, Gustave and Louisa, nee Serth, Herpin; a brother, Edward Herpin; a sister, Alma Meyer; and a cousin and dear friend, Elmer Sterthman.
Surviving are her niece, Gayle Theis; a cousin, Carol Sterthman; and great-nieces, and great-nephews.
