Print Obituary
Marilyn Iona Borger, nee Knipp, 94, of Freeburg, IL, born August 5, 1929, in New Memphis, IL, died at 6:50 p.m. Sunday, October 22, 2023, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, O’Fallon, IL, with her son and daughter at her side.

Marilyn, daughter of Oscar and Lena, nee Krausz, Knipp, graduated from New Memphis Grade School and New Baden High School, class of 1947. She was baptized, confirmed, and married by Rev. Almar Mueller in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in New Memphis. She graduated from Rubicam Business College in St. Louis and worked as a secretary at Laclede Steel Company’s St. Louis office for seven years. After marriage to Robert Borger on April 30, 1950, she became a resident of Freeburg.

Returning to the work force after her three children were in school, she worked 26 years in the office of Professional Auto Supply in Freeburg, retiring in 1992. She and Robert enjoyed a retirement trip to Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji, with their daughter, Brenda, and her husband, Bill. Robert and Marilyn also traveled through all 50 states, especially memorable was their road trip to Alaska with their son, Rod, wife, Debbie and 6-month-old granddaughter, Robyn.

Marilyn was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ Freeburg since 1951, a member of its Women’s Guild, and a past long-time volunteer church office worker. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Locklar-Smith Unit 550 since 1951, past president (6 terms) and secretary for more than 40 years. Marilyn was a life member of the Freeburg Historical Society and the Friends of the Freeburg Library. She was a past long-time election judge, blood donor, and volunteer in the grade school library. Marilyn was on the Board of the Freeburg Food and Clothing Bank, and each month packed groceries for the pantry.

An avid reader, she frequented the Freeburg Library from its beginning. She still enjoyed bicycle riding to age 89, especially with her daughter, Barb on their tandem bike locally and on bike paths in several states. Marilyn enjoyed God’s creation as she traveled with family on awesome trips. She was an enthusiastic spectator at her daughter’s high school/college sports activities and, more recently, Barb’s Senior Olympics accomplishments. She kept her mind active with word and number puzzles, enjoyed board and card games, and all family-time. Marilyn was very grateful to have lived to see her grandchildren successfully achieve their professional goals. Her last special delight was meeting her great- granddaughter, Riley Elizabeth.

Preceding her in death were her husband of nearly 60 years, Robert, in March 2010; daughter, Brenda Dickerson in July 1997; her parents; brother, Oscar A.J. Knipp and wife, Edna; nephews, Phil Knipp, Steve Knipp, Paul Borger and David Smith, in-laws, Clem and Marguerite, nee Brueggemann, Borger; brother-in-law, Donald Borger and wife, Janet; sister-in-law, Doris Smith and husband, Lavern.

Surviving are her daughter, Barbara Borger of Freeburg, IL; son, Rod and wife, Debbie of Belleville, IL; granddaughter, Dr. Robyn Borger Stephenson and her husband, Robert Stephenson III, and great-granddaughter, Riley Stephenson, of Jacksonville, FL; grandson, Ross and his wife, Megan Borger of Springfield, IL; nephews, Richard Knipp, Phil Borger, and Tim Smith; and a niece, Suzanne Borger.

Memorials are encouraged for St. Paul’s UCC of Freeburg or Friends of the Freeburg Library. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.
