Melvin John Hummert, 89, of Belleville, IL, born December 18, 1933, in New Baden, IL, died Monday, June 12, 2023, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

Melvin was a retired truck driver. He was a member of St. Peter’s Cathedral Parish, Belleville, IL. Melvin was a United States Army veteran. He enjoyed a long retirement, tending to his property and playing with his dog, Kirby.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Clarice Ann, nee Stowers, Hummert, whom he married on August 29, 1962; his parents, John and Hulda, nee Beelmann, Hummert; a brother, Albert Hummert; and his three sisters, Marcella Albers, Loretta Hoeft and Lorraine Wienstruer.

Surviving are his son Ronald L. (Shannon) Hummert of Belleville, IL; his daughter, Linda M. (Joseph) Gerling of Belleville, IL; four grandchildren, Seth Kelly, Trevor Kelly, Danielle McFadden, and Veronica Hummert; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Verena Harwerth.

Visitation:  Friends may visit from 10 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 22, 2023, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL.

Funeral:  Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 22, 2023, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL, with Deacon Corby Valentine officiating.

Burial with honors will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.
