Nancy Bozsa

Print Obituary
Nancy Bozsa, nee Douglas, 71, of Freeburg, IL, born July 4, 1951, in Brookport, IL, passed away with family beside her on Sunday, May 21, 2023, at Mercy Hospital, St. Louis, MO.  Her battle with medical issues in recent years showed her courage in facing life challenges in a positive light. Despite these difficulties, Nancy stayed strong until the end.

As a child, Nancy enjoyed spending time with her older siblings Hazel, Harry, and David and taking family trips to Florida. She spent much of her childhood helping at the family store.

After graduating from Eastern Illinois University, Nancy began a 34-year career as an 8th grade teacher at Red Bud Elementary. During her tenure, she served as an English teacher, a mentor, union representative, gifted coordinator, scholar bowl sponsor, and many other positions. She also went on to obtain her master’s and specialist’s degrees from SIUE. She positively influenced the lives of thousands of students and went above and beyond to serve the school community.

On July 1st of 1978, Nancy married the love of her life, James Bozsa. Together they enjoyed traveling to Florida in the winter months, watching T.V., and building their dream home. They went on to have two children together, Joe and Sara. She was a wonderful, devoted mother. She adored her two granddaughters, Ava and Addison, more than anything. Nina, as she was known to them, cherished having them over to swim in her pool, bake cookies, and read to them.

She cherished her friends and maintained many long-term relationships, including her Brookport friends and Red Bud colleagues. Nancy will be remembered by her friends as a wise, fun-loving, kind friend, who gave excellent advice.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Flora, nee Neely, Douglas; her brother, David Douglas; and her sister, Hazel Davis.

Surviving are her husband, James Bozsa;
two children, Joe Bozsa, and Sara (Alex) Finch;
two grandchildren, Ava and Addison Finch;
her brother, Harry Douglas;
and a niece and nephew, Diane Leonard, and Shane Douglas.

Miss Boza was one of my 7th grade teachers. My fondest memory of her is when she would read the class a chapter or so two each day from a book. I don't remember what the books were, but I remember being mesmerized by her ability to read the stories with such feeling and emotion. I now read stories to my grandson, and wish so often that I could read them like Miss Boza. My sister and I bumped into her several years ago at St. Elizabeth's Hospital when our mom was having surgery. To our surprise, she remembered us and we sat and had lunch together. What a sweet moment. My deepest sympathy to her family.

I am so saddened by Nancy's passing. Our families have been intertwined for over 40 years with Joe being best man in my son's wedding. I will miss my good friend but I know she is in heaven praising God and walking with the angels.

I can't even begin to tell of all my wonderful memories of my twenty years with Nancy as my partner at the Red Bud Elementary School Junior Hugh Language Arts Department. Her classroom was always right next to mine, and I think there was a path worn from my classroom to hers from me going next door to consult with her on so many matters. She always had good, insightful advice for everything. We both loved our many years working with our students and wonderful staff at RBES.
