Print Obituary
Nicholas “Nick” A. Gehrs, 87, of Belleville, IL, born July 14, 1936, in Carlyle, IL, died Tuesday, November 7, 2023, in Belleville, IL.

Nick grew up in Carlyle, where he attended St. Mary’s High School. He played basketball for the St. Mary’s Red Peppers, and always said his favorite class was Home Economics, which is where he began his love for cooking.

In 1953, at the age of 18, he joined the Army and served most of his time in Ansbach, Germany. He was proud of his military service and was on the track and basketball team in his battalion. After serving, he was part of the Beckemeyer, IL, Arms Drill Team and participated in many local parades.

Nick was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Belleville for 60 years. He was active in the Athletic Association, coached basketball, cooked for the Men’s Club, and volunteered for the Parish Picnics. He served mass and Novenas there and ushered for Saturday night masses.

Nick loved sports. His favorite teams were Althoff Catholic High School and the St. Louis Cardinals. All four of his sons attended Althoff and for 50 years would enjoy watching Althoff football, basketball, and baseball games.  He also was part of the chain gang for over 20 years at the football games.

He was a meatcutter for 45 years at various grocery stores in the area, and for the last 10 years worked at Schnucks in Swansea. Nick was a loyal member of the Meatcutters Union.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Geraldine “Gerry” Gehrs, nee Knies, whom he married June 10, 1958, and who died August 29, 2017. He was also preceded in death by his son, Steve Gehrs; his parents, Nick and Veronica Gehrs; a sister, Imogene Calcaterra- LePique; and two brothers, Bob and John Gehrs.

Surviving are his three sons, Nick (Joan) Gehrs of St. Charles, MO, Mark (Heidi) Gehrs of Millstadt, IL, and Tim (Peggy) Gehrs of Millstadt, IL; nine grandchildren, Lucas Gehrs, Jacob (Melissa) Gehrs, Phillip Gehrs, Leah Gehrs, Gretchen (TJ) Jung, Clare (Jack) Bahlinger, Kate Gehrs, Charlie Gehrs, and Lydia Gehrs; four great-grandchildren, Ella, Greta, Margo Gehrs, and Louie Bahlinger; four brothers, Jim, Tom, Whitey, and Bill Gehrs; along with many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Althoff Catholic High School, or St. Mary’s Parish, or the Alzheimer’s Association. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.

My condolences to the Gehrs family. Mr. Gehrs had a lot to be proud of. The world is a better place because of his service to the country and community. I was lucky to see him at HollyBrook last year listening to the bluegrass ensemble that I play in which is a testament to his zest for life and wanting to stay engaged. Cheers to a life well lived.

I always enjoyed seeing your Dad serving novena or ushering mass whenever I went to St Mary’s. I was extremely touched when he volunteered to serve the funeral mass for my brother Dean. He was a good man. I know how much you will miss him. May he rest in peace. Prayers for all of you .

What a great man. I was lucky to see him last Christmas, with all his family around him. Laughing as we played cards. He was so good natured that it was his default mode. I told him how much he influenced me growing up at his house with Gerry, Nick, Tim, Steve and Mark. His commitment to fitness and loving family inspired me. '"Break a sweat every day", he told me. RIP Mr Gehrs
