Norman Sowels, 97, of Swansea, IL, born December 4, 1925, in Belleville, IL, died Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at his residence surrounded by family.

Norman retired from the Monsanto Company. He was a World War II United States Navy veteran. He was a 45-year member of the Swansea Moose. Norman was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle.

Norman was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Alice, nee Wilson, Sowels, whom he married on September 6, 1947, and who died on December 18, 2012; his parents, Joseph and Margaret, nee Krupp, Sowels; and his eight siblings, William Bruns, Ervin (Mary) Bruns, Selma Turner, Harlan (Edna) Bruns, Virgil Sowels, Gladys (Melvin) Schmidt, James (Deloris) Sowells, and Ruth Gregory.

Surviving are his children, Norman “Jerry” (Bonnie) Sowels, Claudia (Craig) Hubbard, and Dianne (Rick) Sieben;
six grandchildren, Amy Landers, Jason Sowels, Joele (Kenneth) Pinkerton, Lauren (Gerry) McManama, Casey Sieben, and Cortney Sieben;
ten great-grandchildren, Margaret, Anna, Victoria, Alexis, Julia, Alaina, Henry, Joseph, Penny, and Gemma;
and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Steve Martin for being a dear friend.

Funeral: Private funeral services will be held Saturday, March 25, 2023, with Pastor Hal Santos officiating.

Burial will be held at Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, IL.

I am very sorry to hear of Norm’s passing. He and Mary were such dear friends of my parents. He was a dear man. The Friday night fish fry gang is reunited. Deepest sympathies to all of the family.

Uncle Norman was so special to us family here in Maryland. We loved him and were so proud to call him our Uncle. I will always remember our special times together and how much fun and laughter we experienced.
