Oliver “Ollie” Schmierbach, 93, of Phoenix, AZ, formerly of Smithton, IL, born February 3, 1922, in Smithton, IL, died Monday night, October 12, 2015, at LaEstancia Nursing and Rehab Center, Phoenix, AZ, where he was receiving physical therapy following a stroke.  Ollie resided in Smithton for 90 years before moving to Phoenix three years ago, where he resided with his daughter and son-in-law.

Mr. Schmierbach was a machinist for Industrial Roller Company, Smithton, IL, before his retirement 31 years ago.   He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Smithton, IL, the Smithton Sportsman’s Club, the Industrial Rubber Roller Thursday Morning Breakfast Group, and the Smithton Senior Center.  Oliver was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.  He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and trapper and loved to teach others his many sporting skills.  He enjoyed gardening and tree grafting as well.  Ollie was a renowned morel mushroom hunter, but those secret locations were shared with only a select few.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Luella F., nee Weber, Schmierbach, whom he married on May 27,1944, and who died on December 27, 2006; his son, Gary Schmierbach; his parents, Joseph and Johanna, nee Hausmann, Schmierbach; his step-mother, Esther, nee Metzger, Schmierbach; and three brothers, Charles Schmierbach, Floyd (Dolly) Schmierbach, and Irwin Schmierbach, in infancy.

Surviving are his daughter, Bonnie (Joel) Fritz of Phoenix, AZ;
a daughter-in-law, Pat Schmierbach of Smithton, IL;
four grandchildren,  Jason Fritz,
Dana Schmierbach, Amy Schmierbach (Loren Albers),
and Michael (Melanie) Schmierbach;
great-grandsons, Mathew and Lucas;
step-granddaughter, Jennifer;
step-great grandchildren, Christopher, Tannis and Maleigha;
nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephew;
and many dear, dear friends.

Service:  A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, November 14, 2015, at the Smithton Senior Center.  Burial will be a private ceremony for the immediate family only.
