A devout Roman Catholic, Robert was a Marine veteran of World War II, the China Occupation and the Korean Conflict, and was a civil servant with more than 41 years of continuous government service. Robert was an early pioneer in the field of computing and data processing beginning in 1957 with Washington University before returning to government service with HQ MATS, Operations Research, MAC HQ, and as Data Base Administrator for MAC HQ. He was an early member of the Data Processing Society of America, a longtime member of the Engineers Club of St. Louis, and Operations Research Society of America.
Robert was active for many years with Catholic Scouting. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 1028, Fourth Degree council 199, and served as a member of the degree team for a number of years.
Bob lived his Catholic faith every day. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.
He was an active member of St. Henry’s Parish, Belleville IL. He was generous to a fault.
He is preceded in death by his father, Frank Carty; his mother and step-father, Martha, nee Hauss, Carty (Elmer) Donnewald; and his brother, William C. Carty.
He is survived by his beloved wife Helen, nee Gereaux, Carty, whom he married at Holy Rosary Church in St. Louis on May 7, 1960. He was blessed with five children, Mary C., William M. (Andrea), Robert T. Jr. (Lynda), Maureen A. (Robert)Reed, and John P. (Amy) Carty; 15 grandchildren; sisters-in-law; and many nephews, nieces and friends.
In lieu of flowers, Bob would prefer memorials be made in the form of Memorial Masses, to St. Henry’s St. Vincent DePaul Society, an organization dedicated to helping those in need, or to the Belleville Area Right to Life Society. Visitation: Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 5, 2017, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, March 6, 2017, at St. Henry’s Catholic Church, Belleville, IL.
Funeral: Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 6, 2017, at St. Henry’s Catholic Church, Belleville, IL, with Rev. Kenneth York officiating.
Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.

I seem to have crossed paths in many ways with Bob. His son Robert, Jr. is a dear, dear friend and business partner. I love Bob, Jr., Lynda, and Bob Sr’s grandkids Kate and Bob. Bob Sr worked with my dad at Scott AFB in the late 60s. My Boy Scout Troop in Virginia is also 1028. Everywhere for decades I’ve felt his good hand and great spirit. We toast that spirit, a good life well lived, and Bob’s wonderful legacy. Many cheers Bob!
