Ruth Ann Sullivan

Print Obituary
Ruth Ann Sullivan, nee Scheibel, 82, of Belleville, IL, was called to Heaven peacefully on January 20, 2024, with her three children beside her at home.

Ruth Ann was born on October 30, 1941, in Belleville, IL, daughter of the late Erwin and Hazel, nee Weil, Scheibel. She graduated from Belleville Township High School in 1959. Two years later, on September 30, 1961, she married the love of her life, Paul A. Sullivan, at St. Teresa Catholic Church. Soon after they created their loving family of son, David, and daughters, Katherine and Ann-Marie. Ruth Ann invested her love and energy into forming their home life until all of their children were in school. Paul then encouraged her to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse.

Ruth Ann was a caring and dedicated RN at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for nearly 28 years. During that time, Paul and Ruth Ann enjoyed adventures with their friends and especially their six grandchildren, Riley Christopher (fiancée Kristen Campbell) Mayr, Mitchell Paul Sullivan, Ian David Mayr, Halle Nicole Sullivan, Clare Marie LaBlance, and Grace Elizabeth LaBlance. They loved their grandkids deeply and treasured their time together.

Ruth Ann retired from St. Elizabeth’s to lovingly care for Paul when he became ill and passed away much too soon on April 18, 2006. She then devoted the next ten years to caring for her mother, during which time she also continued attending her grandchildren’s activities and spending time with her family.

A devoted sports enthusiast, Ruth Ann found great joy in cheering for her beloved St. Louis Cardinals. Whether gathered around the TV or at the stadium, her passion for the game brought together family and friends. She also enjoyed going to lunch and playing cards and dominoes with her dear friends. She had a huge heart and her smile made others smile.

Ruth Ann was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a sister, Jeanette (Norman) Bessen; and a brother, Russel Scheibel.

In addition to her children, Dr. David (Sandy) Sullivan of Evansville, IN, Katherine (David) Mayr of Smithton, IL, and Ann-Marie (Gary) LaBlance of Swansea, IL; Ruth Ann is also survived by her grandchildren; a brother, Rick (Linda) Scheibel, of Mascoutah, IL; a sister-in-law, Mona Scheibel of Millstadt, IL; nieces and nephews; and many cherished friends.

Ruth Ann lived a lifetime of caregiving. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke Catholic Church or to the American Red Cross. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at

I am so sorry for the loss of your mother and grandmother. We were “best friends” in grade school and we went to high school together. She was always so nice. We got to visit at our last high school reunion. I don’t get a paper but I happened to mention Ruth Ann to Barb Constance and she told me what had happened to her. Again I am so sorry.

To the Sullivan family, I worked with your mom at St. Elizabeth’s years ago. She was my mentor, she was one of the sweetest, kindest best people that I’ve ever known. She loved her family without measure, she will be truly missed! She was that ray of sunshine, that person that you will never forget. I’m so sorry for your loss, the world needs more Ruthie’s

David, Kathy and Ann, I’m so sorry to hear your sweet mother passed away. I’m not sure you remember me but I spent a lot of time at your house and At Mary and Tom Budde’s house too. I lived at 6 Kniepkamp Place next to Ronnie Chaput. Your mom was so nice to me. I’d call her Mrs Sullivan. She insisted I call her Ruth Ann. I remember when she decided to go to school to become a nurse. A friend of mine used to work with her at St E. After my parents passed away I kept the house for awhile. I would see her cutting the grass and doing all the yard work. Your dad Paul was also very nice. I remember he passed away April 18 on my daughter’s birthday. My mom passed away from pancreatic Cancer. Someone mentioned to me your mother did too. Just know She is your Angel now in heaven. She will always be looking over you. Prayers to you all. I want to express my sympathy on the passing of Ruth. I worked with her for many yrs at STE. We were on the same weekends, so we saw a lot of each other. My oldest daughter remembers swimming at your pool. I am on a cruise and won’t be able to attend the services. The three of you took great care of your mom.
