Shirley was born and lived in Belleville for most of her life. She was a graduate of the Academy of Notre Dame. Shirley met her husband Bill while working as an office assistant. She considered a career as a flight attendant but decided to marry Bill and stay in Belleville. Shirley worked various office jobs throughout the years and was instrumental in the startup of Continental Cable Company- the first cable company in Belleville.
After retirement, Shirley enjoyed her time with the “Bagel Bunch” at St. Louis Bread Company. She was an avid card player and bowler. She loved to travel and was always planning her next adventure. Shirley doted on her pets, who brought her so much joy, including Buddy, who predeceased her by three weeks. After being raised as an only child, she was blessed with three children, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Shirley was especially close to her cousin Vivian Hassenstab, who she considered a sister, loyal confidant, and friend, her entire life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William L. Miller, whom she married on February 7, 1959, and who died on January 24, 2021; her parents, Clarence and Laurene, nee Rheinecker, Hermann; a sister-in-law, Vera Lee Witwer, and a brother-in-law Harley Witwer.
She is survived by a son, Michael E. (Janet) Miller of Tilden, IL; two daughters, Karen S. (Michael) Alvarez, Huntsville, AL, JoAnn (James) Killeen, Chesterfield, MO; six grandchildren, Allison (Tom) Sheffer of Louisville, KY, Andrea Alvarez of Huntsville, AL, Melissa Miller (Jon) Shudra of Marquette, MI, William Miller of Sheboygan, WI, JD Killeen and Jack Killeen, both of Chesterfield, MO; seven great-grandchildren, Luke, Nate, Sebastian, and Vivi Sheffer, Kayla, Brooke, and Mason Hatfield; and one niece, Wendy Witwer Laughrey, Orange City, Florida.
We would like to acknowledge the staff at Friendship Village who were attentive and loving to our mother. They went above and beyond on numerous occasions to provide excellent care and concern for her well-being. We would especially like to thank Laverne whose presence was comforting to our mother and whose exceptional care was greatly appreciated.
