Suzann Hopper

Print Obituary
Suzann Hopper, 62, of St. Louis, MO, born December 24, 1960, in St. Louis, MO, died peacefully Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at home surrounded by her dear family and friends, following a valiant second battle with breast cancer.

As a toddler, the family moved to Belleville where she attended Cathedral Grade School and Althoff Catholic High School. She continued her education at Jewish Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1983, then went on to receive her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She enjoyed a 38-year nursing career. Suzann enjoyed being a travel nurse for 5 years and spent her last 15 years with BJC Healthcare. She was proud to have visited 16 countries, but enjoyed most her time galivanting with her dear friends, wading in everyone’s pool, and her time with her cousins in Alabama. There was always Don Julio tequila present when she threw one of her yearly Halloween galas, or anytime you may happen to visit.

Her living motto, hung lovingly in her home was “Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming, wow what a ride!”

James and Jude would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to her dear friends Chris, Karen, Sylivia, Linda, and Gina, for the loving care they gave her, and dear friend, Cheri, for her love. We would also like to thank BJC Hospice for their support.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph I. and Doris R., nee Rasp, Hopper; and her sister-in-law, Teresa D. Hopper.

She is survived by her two brothers, James J. Hopper (Melanie) of Brighton, IL and Jude J. Hopper, Sr., of Stonefort, IL;
six nieces and nephews, Rachel B. Hopper, Jude J. Hopper II (Erin), Natalie M. Hopper, Joshua J. (Elisabeth) Hopper, and Jacob J. Hopper;
a great niece, Elliana M. Barcinas;
an aunt and uncle, Ann and Paul Rasp;
an aunt, Bea Hopper;
and many dear cousins and friends.

Memorials may be made to Suzann Hopper Memorial Nursing Scholarship, in c/o the Bank of O’Fallon, P.O. BOX 1626 O’Fallon, IL, 62269. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.

Visitation: Friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 8, 2023, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, September 9, 2023, at St. Henry Catholic Church, Belleville, IL.

Funeral: A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 9, 2023, at St. Henry Catholic Church, Belleville, IL, with Rev. Kenneth York officiating and Msgr. William Hitpas and Fr. James Thomas concelebrating.

Suzann was my primary nurse the year I spent in Jewish on the rehab floor back in the mid 80's. I was just a kid & my life had been completely turned inside out & upside down. There were many times she sat with me and showed compassion, patience and brought some humor to otherwise dismal things we dealt with. Her kindness was never forgotten.

I was lucky enough to hang with Suzann both as a travel nurse and as a homegirl. She was the best movie-going, brunch-eating, farkle-playing friend I could ask for. Miss you, babe.

I was lucky enough to meet Suzann on a travel assignment in New Orleans. We traveled in a pack and had a great time terrorizing the streets of the French Quarter and then returning back to our responsible nursing positions. She was great fun! I was happy to have had a chance to reconnect with Suzann at Gina’s this winter. Despite her illness, you could see her love of life . Peace to Suzann and all her family and friends. She will be remembered
