Verdell M. Fehlker, nee Schaefer, 91, of Belleville, IL, born June 19, 1930, in Smithton, IL, died Friday, January 28, 2022, at her residence.

Verdell retired from St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Belleville, IL, on September 11, 1992, after 41 years of employment there. She began in Central Receiving and finished her remaining 20 years in the recovery room where she made lifetime friends.

She was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church, Belleville, IL, a member of the Young At Heart Group, and the Quilters Club at the church. Verdell was a member of the Belleville/Swansea Moose Lodge 1221 and the Catholic War Veterans Auxiliary. She so enjoyed spending time with family and friends, the many years on a bowling league, playing euchre and 51, quilting, playing bingo, and watching the St. Louis Cardinals.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years Marcellus H. Fehlker; a daughter, Nancy Fehlker; her parents, Jacob and Bertha, nee Schilling, Schaefer; six brothers, Joseph (Dorothy) Schaefer, Clarence (Vera) Schaefer, Clement Schaefer, Victor (Loretta) Schaefer, Oliver Schaefer, and Leon (Shirley) Schaefer; two sisters, Lucille (Charlie) Pauketat and Betty Vernier, and a sister-in-law, Rita Schaefer.

She is survived by three children, Steve (JoAnn Snead) Fehlker, Pat Fehlker, and Debbie Fehlker; three grandchildren, Elizabeth (Charlie Jones) Downing, Michael Downing (fiancé, Caitlin Barta), and Ariel Mazur; sisters-in-law, Carol Schaefer, Norma Schaefer, and Louise Rathmann; brothers-in-law, John (Laverne) Vernier and Fred Siddle; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; cousins; and friends.

The family would like to give special thanks to Hospice of Southern Illinois, especially to Verdell’s nurses, Patrick, Mike, Misty, and Sarah, and to her caretakers, Betty McCoy and Mary Schaefer, and her beautician, Jeanne Wissehr.

Visitation:  Friends may visit the family from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, Saturday, February 12, 2022, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, Belleville, IL. Masks are required.

Funeral: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, February 12, 2022, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, Belleville, IL. Masks are required

Interment will follow at Walnut Hill Cemetery, Belleville, IL.
