Virgil worked as a wireman in the electrical industry for 32 years, before his retirement. He was a member of the IBEW Local 309, past president of the Freeburg Sportsman’s Club, an original member of Paderborn Bass Club, and past member of the GFFPDA. Virgil was an avid outdoorsman whose hobbies were hunting, fishing, and a being a member of Ducks Unlimited. He was also a lifelong sports fan. Virgil was a United States Navy Veteran.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon H. Oeltjen and Opal D., nee Helbig, Koesterer.
Virgil is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Janet R., nee Greenlee, Oeltjen, whom he married on June 30, 1978; two daughters, Sheila (Chad) Nolan and Leanne (George) Hausdorf; a son, Brian (Jill) Oeltjen; seven grandchildren, Andrew (Summer) Hausdorf, George (Madison) Hausdorf, Braedyn (Brandie) Hausdorf, Hunter Oeltjen, Zane Oeltjen, Mitchell (Paytin) Nolan, and Logan (Kassie) Mueth; a great-grandchild, Sutton Rose Mueth; five siblings, Jane (Bill) Self, John (Kay) Oeltjen, Ora Mae (Jeff) Wood, Judy (Kevin) Haegele, and Janice (Chris) Starek; and many dear nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Military honors will be held at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Freeburg, IL.
